Our Banner in the Sky | Frederic Edwin Church, 1861 | Maple Wood Print
Created in May 1861, during the opening weeks of the American Civil War and shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter, Our Banner in the Sky transforms the American landscape into a powerful vision of the national flag. Glowing clouds form its red and white stripes, the blue sky becomes a field of stars, and a bare tree rises like a flagstaff against the horizon.
Frederic Edwin Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, was celebrated for his luminous landscapes, dramatic skies, and ability to give nature symbolic meaning. Rather than depicting soldiers or battle, Church used light, cloud, and atmosphere to express courage, unity, liberty, and hope.
For collectors of American history, Civil War art, Hudson River School painting, and patriotic imagery, Our Banner in the Sky remains one of the most distinctive artistic expressions of American identity from the Civil War era.
Faithfully Restored
This edition has been carefully digitally restored to recover clarity, tonal depth, atmospheric balance, and fine detail while preserving the original composition, colors, and historical character of the artwork.
No generative AI was used to recreate, redraw, or reinterpret the image. The restoration was guided by human judgment with the aim of preserving the authentic visual language and spirit of Frederic Edwin Church's original work.
Maple Wood Fine Art Presentation
This edition presents Our Banner in the Sky directly on certified sustainable maple wood, creating a warm and distinctive alternative to traditional paper, canvas, or metal prints.
Each artwork is digitally printed onto approximately 1/2 inch thick maple surfaced wood, allowing the natural material itself to become part of the finished presentation.
The result combines Church's historic landscape with the organic warmth and tactile character of real wood, creating a piece that feels both timeless and architectural.
Natural | White Finish
Choose between two distinct presentations:
Natural allows the character and grain of the maple wood to remain visible through lighter or unprinted areas of the artwork. This creates a warm, organic appearance with subtle variations unique to each individual wood panel.
White Finish uses a white ink underlay to provide a cleaner and more contemporary foundation for the artwork, helping preserve brighter colors and greater separation between the image and the natural wood tone.
Because maple is a natural material, variations in grain, tone, and surface character are expected and make every wood print subtly unique.
Sustainable Maple Wood
Each Maple Wood Print features:
- Certified sustainably sourced maple wood
- Approximately 1/2 inch thick wood panel
- Natural or White finish
- Direct digital printing
- Visible natural wood grain on the Natural finish
- Full bleed or bordered presentation options
- Integrated keyhole hanger mount
- Made to order production
The solid wood construction gives the artwork a clean frameless presence while retaining the warmth and individuality of a natural material.
Border & Presentation
Depending on the selected configuration, the artwork may be presented as a full bleed print or with a choice of border widths.
A full bleed presentation creates a stronger and more immediate visual presence, while a border introduces additional space around the composition for a more restrained gallery-style appearance.
Available configurations are displayed with the relevant product options.
Ready to Display
Each Maple Wood Print includes an integrated keyhole hanger mount, allowing the panel to sit cleanly against the wall without the visual weight of a traditional external frame.
The frameless construction gives the artwork a simple and contemporary architectural character while allowing the maple surface to remain visible as part of the design.
