Our Banner in the Sky | Frederic Edwin Church, 1861
Created in May 1861, during the opening weeks of the American Civil War and shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter, Our Banner in the Sky transforms the American landscape into a powerful vision of the national flag. Glowing clouds form its red and white stripes, the blue sky becomes a field of stars, and a bare tree rises like a flagstaff against the horizon.
Frederic Edwin Church, a leading figure of the Hudson River School, was celebrated for his luminous landscapes, dramatic skies, and ability to give nature symbolic meaning. Rather than depicting soldiers or battle, Church used light, cloud, and landscape to express courage, unity, liberty, and hope.
For collectors of American history, Civil War art, Hudson River School painting, and patriotic imagery, Our Banner in the Sky remains one of the most distinctive artistic expressions of American identity from the Civil War era.
Faithfully Restored
This edition has been carefully digitally restored to recover clarity, tonal depth, atmospheric balance, and fine detail while preserving the original composition, colors, and historical character of the artwork.
No generative AI was used to recreate, redraw, or reinterpret the image. The restoration was guided by human judgment with the aim of preserving the authentic visual language and spirit of Frederic Edwin Church's original work.
Box Framed Fine Art Presentation
This edition is professionally produced as a premium Box Framed Fine Art Print and arrives fully assembled and ready to hang.
Each artwork is reproduced using professional giclée printing and high quality archival inks to preserve the original detail, tonal depth, atmospheric character, and subtle color transitions of the work.
The print is presented within a hand-stained wood box frame with a refined contemporary profile. Its distinctive depth creates a subtle shadowline effect and gives the artwork a stronger architectural presence while allowing the composition itself to remain the visual focus.
The Box Frame has an approximate face width of 20 mm and a depth of 33 mm, creating a substantial yet understated presentation particularly suited to both contemporary and transitional interiors.
Fine Art Paper Selection
For our Box Framed Prints, the paper is carefully selected to complement the artwork, its colors, tonal character, and frame configuration.
We primarily use premium fine art papers chosen for their refined surface, excellent color reproduction, fine detail, and long lasting presentation. Our aim is to select the paper that allows each artwork to be displayed at its best while preserving the visual character of the original work.
Paper selection is not offered as a standard product variant. If you have a specific paper or finish preference, please contact us by email immediately after placing your order. We will do our best to accommodate your request before production begins, subject to availability.
Protective Glazing
Each framed print is glazed with a high-clarity acrylic protective surface, offering excellent UV resistance and impact protection while preserving the artwork's tonal depth and color accuracy.
Museum-quality anti-reflective glazing (Motheye) is available as an upgrade upon request. Contact us at support@averyton.com for details.
Frame Finishes
Choose from three refined frame finishes:
Black | White | Natural
Black creates a strong gallery presentation, White offers a clean and restrained appearance, and Natural introduces the warmth and organic character of wood.
Natural frames are crafted from real wood with a high-quality oak-effect laminate finish and may display subtle variations in tone and grain, giving each piece an individual character.
With Mat | No Mat
This Box Framed edition is available with or without a conservation grade mat.
The mat creates additional visual space around the artwork, giving the composition a more formal and considered gallery presentation. It is acid free and designed to resist fading and discoloration over time.
Choosing No Mat allows the artwork to occupy the full available image area, creating a stronger and more immediate presentation.
Available mat configurations are displayed with the relevant product variants.
