Created in May 1861, during the opening weeks of the American Civil War and shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter, Our Banner in the Sky transforms the American landscape into a powerful vision of the national flag. Glowing clouds form its red and white stripes, the blue sky becomes a field of stars, and a bare tree rises like a flagstaff against the horizon.

Frederic Edwin Church, one of the leading American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, was celebrated for his dramatic skies, luminous atmosphere, and ability to give nature symbolic meaning. Here, rather than depicting soldiers or battle, Church allowed light, cloud, and landscape to express courage, unity, liberty, and hope.
